Tips to using Google search like a pro

For over 15 years, Google has been organizing the world's information and making it useful. Most of the times, it works great, but every once in awhile, you need something so specific that a simple keyword search just won't do. So here are a few tips that'll help you to find exactly what you're looking for.

1. Search for exact phrases (" ")

Putting a certain phrase in quotes will tell Google you are looking for that exact phrase. This can be useful when looking for a title of a book or movie that may not be very popular.

2. Exclude words in your search (-)

Use hyphens to exclude words in your search. For instance, you're looking for a butter tart recipe without pecans. You can search butter tart recipe -pecans.

3. Specialize your search within a website (site:)

To search within a website, use "site:". Looking for an article on cats in the New York Times? Search cats

4. Search for a specific file type (filetype:)

Looking for a PDF version of your TV manual? Search for the manual and add filetype:PDF. This will also work for PowerPoint's (ppt), images (jpg, png), word documents (docx) etc.

5. Search for a number range (..)

Need to find an article between 2010-2014? Typing ".." between two numbers will search within that number range.

6. Search the definition of any word (define:)

Not sure what terpsichorean means? Search define:terpsichorean to find the meaning easily. (It means of or relating to dancing.)

And just for fun, type "do a barrel roll" into Google and see what happens!
