 Description

Be sure to check the notes for Decew Falls first. Unlike the upper falls, this is a steep cascade, perhaps 8 m in height. But where the upper falls is symmetrical and peaceful, the lower falls is rugged and remote.

To reach the lower falls, walk from the parking lot, past the Morningstar Mill and through the break in the fence. Turn left and walk along the trail for several hundred meters. As you get further from the upper falls, you will eventually hear the roar (depending on the season!) of the lower falls. Keep your eyes out for a path down the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. It is possible to use the same point that you can to access the gorge for the upper falls. There may also be a second spot to descend. USE CAUTION HERE! The gorge walls are steep, and you will need to get dirty to find your way to the waterfall. A trail along the lower slope of the gorge wall leads to the crest of the lower falls. Be careful here! This walk is really only for experienced hikers who are in good shape and who are hiking with a buddy! This waterfall is not suitable for children or the elderly

Lower Decew Falls is featured in the print version of "Waterfalls of Ontario.
