These three pictures where taken on January 31, 1998 in Victoria Park. Teams of snow sculptures from around the world gathered to who thier best. I have only three shots here, many of the scuptures were too crowded with people to easily photograph. Taken about 4:30 pm local time, during the setting sun, most of these statues did not last beyound the next 24 hours as the weather changed and started to warm up. All three on HP5+, developed in Xtol, taken with my Crown Graphic and 135mm Xenar. The overall favourite witht he crowds is the second picture below, a work called "Jack the Zipper". January 27, 1998, in St. John's Lithuanian Cemetery, Missauga, Ontario. A long 1 second exposure with my Crown Graphic during a snowstorm, this cemetery is home to some of ht emost specatular headstones I ahve seen in any cemetery in Ontario. Unfortunately constraints of time and weather prevented me from any further picutres. Someday I hope to return.
Just a 20 minute drive south of london are the communities of st. Thomas and Port Stanely, Ontario. both are very old, much older than London. Please watch this area over the next fex motnhs, as you will see many editions to it. With my friend Jeff Booth, local historian, I plan to travel and photograph this most historic area of south-western Ontario.
Old St. Thomas Church, St. Thomas, Ontario 1824 A.D.History oozes out of this place. Built in 1824, is is possibly the oldest remaining church of it's type in all of Ontario. The first burial in the cemetery dates back to 1819. Many famous burials are here, including a veterian of the American Civil War who fell at Willamsburg, a man who fought directly under Lord Nelson on the HMS Victory at the battle of Trafalgar (and survived), and the Judge who sentenced Louis Riel to death, plus many other stories. The church itself is only one of six churches in all of Canada that has the right to bear a Royal Coat of Arms (Queen Victoria). The constant debate amoung local historians is whether the church was named after the community, or the community after the church. Not used as a regular place of worship since the 1870s (replaced by Trinity Anglican), the church is still used for special events and occasions throughout the year. Christ Church Anglican, Port Stanely, Ontario 1845 A.D.Built in 1845, this church on the main street heading into the core of Port Stanley is still open and active in the community. Accross the street is another church, same style, I hope to have a picture of this year. Typical construction of the period, larger brick buildings did not become common locally untill the 1870's.
