Woodland Cemetery, London, Canada

Woodland is the oldest continously operating cemetery in the city of London. Operated by the Anglican Sea of Huron, it started as the original buying grounds around which was in East London. All the graves were later moved to the "new" site now situated on the bank of the main branch of the Thames River, in the west end of the city. The cemetery contians many famous people, including John Labatt, founder of Labatt Brewing company, and many others. I could spend hours wandering around the cemetery, and hope you enjoy these images as much as i do.

Three Crypts Bender 4x5, Kodak 135mm WF Ektar, FP4+, picture taken in the later afternoon, facing into the sun. There are three old, private crypts built into the side of a hill, although only two can easily be seen here. They are the crypts of the Smith and Priddis families.

Fulford Mausoleum Annie Pixely Fulford was a famous stage actress of both the American and British stage during the 1870's and 1880's. Her son died young while on vacation near Port Stanely, Ontario, a small resort town due south of london on the shore of of lake Erie. it is a spectacular private mausoleum, and I liked how the light caught the angel on the peak of the statue when I was out there. FP4+, 10inch Kodak Ektar, Bender 4x5.

Meredith Monument A beautiful, weather worn Celtic cross in the oldest corner of Woodland Cemetery. First burial is dated 1884, the last burial is dated 1978. FP4+, 10in Kodak Ektar, Bender 4x5.

Dougald McKellar So many untold stories in any cemetery. Dougald McKellar died on June 25, 1857, aged 35 years. His wife Mary Ann McCormick died March 25, 1899, aged 77 years. No indication on the stone that she ever remaried, remaining faithful to her husband's memory for almost 42 years.

Scenic Photos

St. Mary's Ontario, Municipal Building. 1891. St. Mary's is one of two Ontario towns who lay claim to the name "StoneTown" (Guelph is the other one). All over St. Mary's are buildings from small single storey homes to this building all biult out of stone from the local quarry. The area between St. Mary's and London, Ontario is rich in aggregates, that is, sand and gravel, and to this day many gravel quarries continue to operate. St. Mary's Cement also operates on the edge of the town. Bender 4x5, Kodak WF 135mm Ektar, HP5+. Taken October, 1997, during renovations - which ou can see if you look closely.

Valley View Road runs along the north branch of the Thames River, out of the north east corner of London, up towards St. Mary's. During the autumn, the changing colour of the leaves is wonderfull to look at. I took this B&W picture early in October 1997, with my Crown Graphic and a yellow fileter, HP5+. Unfortunately my scanner lacks the ability to pick up the subtle shadow detail under the trees in my orginal print. Most scanners do, unless you are scanning negatives or using a drum scanner. Enjoy anyhow.

Pictures From "London East"

Pedersen's Forge

The last operational Blacksmith in the city of London, Ontario. There are other iron workers, but John Pedersen is the last of the old tradition. His father recently died, and the anvil and hammer belong to John Sr. The hammer was hand wrought by John Sr. in Denmark over 60 years ago when he passed from apprentice to journyman, and he used the hammer the rest of his life. Bender 4x5, Kodak WF 135mm, HP5, 10 sec exposure. I wish I could show you the original print on Ilford warm tone paper and sepia toned. Click on the photo for a larger image.

Front View of the forge. Kodak 10" Commercial Ektar, Delta 400, 30 second exposure at F32. Click on the image for a larger view.

Side Image of Anvil and Forge. Taken November of 1997, Orbit 4x5, Komura 90mm, Tmax 400 at 4 min time exposure, set to F45 to retain depth of feild. A great place full of a picutres, but you ahve to be a contorsionist to move around the equipment. Click on the picture for a larger image.

St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church

Corner of Lyle and York Sts, Taken December, 1997. TM400, Orbit 4x5 monorail, 90mm F6.3 WA lens, yellow filter. One of the oldest church communities in London, this church was built by the original Irish immigrants who worked the railroads of south-western Ontario.

The Comic Book Collector

The Comic Book Collector, a local store, located on Dundas St. just a east of Adelaide, on the north side. Steve (the owner) is a friend of mine, and a fellow Babylon 5 addict. Steve is not actually posing, but was watching B5 while I took this picture - it's the only way to get him to stay still for a photograph. :) Tri-X, 4x5, Kodak WF 135mm

Another picture taken in the store, looking in the opposite direction. Tmax 400, 30 sec exposure at F45, 90mm lens. Click on image for larger picutre.
